The Escaped Slave

by Nathan C.S.
(Willis Virginia )

Earnestly works the field,
Dusk till dawn,
Six days a week,
Hard on her knees, kneeled

Running after her sisters,
On the wagon, dust rising.
Crying and screaming.
Master laughing!

Master dead, nightfall near,
She must flee,
Hounds sniffing, snarling.
Nothing but fear.

A secret way out,
The Underground Railroad, Quakers helped.
Pennsylvania, Freedom!

Maryland Plantation Bound,
Going to get my family.
Friends too!
Approximately three hundred.

Harriet Tubman, "Minty"
