Irish Limericks

If you're looking for Irish limericks, you're in the right place. There are so many cool city and county names on the emerald isle, that ideas for these limericks abound. Please feel free to read and share these poems. See our terms of use.

Limerick #1

The first limerick is about Belfast. There is absolutely no political statement in this poem. It is simply a fun play of word, sound, and rhythm.

There was a young fellow from Belfast
That I wanted so badly to tell fast
Not to climb up the stair
As the top step was air.
And that’s why the young fellow fell fast.

Limerick #2

The second limerick is about a man from County Derry. You might recognize the art for his poem. It is by Julie Martin, the illustrator of both of my books,  and a fine artist and all around good person. The art is from my book, A Little Bit of Nonsense. and can also be seen on the Family Poems page of this web site.

County Derry
An old man from down County Derry
Was so unbelievably hairy.
He dressed with a brush
In the morning, while rushed.
And his face? Unbelievably scary!

Limerick #3

The next funny poem is about County Down, and it involves red paint and pajamas. It is illustrated with an old paint can and brush that I take with me to school visits. I have altered it to look red so that it matches the following poem.

County Down
A young lass from old County Down
Was arrested for painting the town.
“It just got in me head
to go paint the town red.”
Which she did in her night-sleeping gown.

Irish Limerick #4

The last of the funny poems on this page is about the town of Mayo. And no, the poem has nothing to do with the whitish sandwich spread. I've illustrated it with a toy from my desk. It seems appropriate.

West Mayo
A silent young man from west Mayo
Had nothing he wanted to say-o.
Was questioned all night,
Held his lips squeezed up tight.
So I guess that he had his own way-o.
